leaks or truths that should be known ??

are we a free country of informed citizens allowed to make our own decisions based on known facts, or are we wee little children that should be shielded from things that put our actions in a bad light ??

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told the BBC that if abuse by the Iraqi security forces was witnessed, or reports of it were received, US military personnel were instructed to inform their commanders.

"And at the appropriate level that information would then be shared with the Iraqi authorities and the military for them to take action."

“No High Contracting Party shall be allowed to absolve itself or any other High Contracting Party of any liability incurred by itself or by another High Contracting Party in respect of breaches referred to in the preceding Article”

if we witness it, we should report it to the appropriate authorites

it is perported that it was reported up the chain of command, if the people @ the top (think where trickle down starts) didn't do anything, they should be prosecuted for war crimes, bushco or obama

just saying

and don't be a rascist, sexist, homophobic authoritarian fascist and vote republican (or for anyone named bean) on the 2nd, please

green, independant, third party only *

video of segment @ link, partial transcript:

BILL MOYERS: But members of Congress, they take the same contributions from the same insurance and real estate and drug industry. You look at the list of contributions to members of Congress- they are as saddled by obligations as the President, right?

ROBERT KUTTNER: Well, some are and some aren't. I mean, the House, at least, just passed a bill that's over $100 billion to extend unemployment, extend insurance benefits in the interim prevent lay-offs at the level of state and local government. Now, you have a group of Democrats, and this is the real pity of it. The Democrats are supposed to be the party of the average person. You have the so-called New Democrats who are really the party of Wall Street. And then you have the Blue Dogs who are fiscal conservatives. And if you look at what happened in Barney Frank's committee to the financial reform bill, he's a pretty good liberal, he ended up looking like a complete stooge for industry because in order to get a bill out of his own committee, he had to appease the 15 New Democrats, so-called, who were put on that committee mostly by Rahm Emanuel when he was the-

MATT TAIBBI: Sort of as a means to raise money.

ROBERT KUTTNER: As a means to raise money. So Melissa Bean, who's a two-term Democratic Congressman ends up being the power broker because she controls 15 votes on Barney Frank's committee of what she's going to allow out of committee and what she isn't.

BILL MOYERS: Why does she control 15 votes?

ROBERT KUTTNER: Because there are 15 New Dems, and this is the centrist caucus that particularly specializes in taking money from the financial industry.

BILL MOYERS: You call them centrist, don't you mean corporate Democrats? I mean-

ROBERT KUTTNER: Corporate, yes, sorry. That's too kind. They're corporate Democrats who were put on that committee because Rahm Emanuel felt that there's no better place than the House Financial Services Committee if you want to shake down Wall Street, to put it bluntly.

MATT TAIBBI: There's a great example of Melissa Bean's power was when the banks wanted to pass an amendment into the bill that would have prevented the states from making their own tougher financial regulatory rules. And Bean put through this amendment that basically said that the federal government would have purview over all these laws. And it passed. And this was the kind of thing that the banks wanted. They just go to Melissa Bean, she puts that amendment in there and it and it gets through

officially got kicked off the ballot yesterday

be sure to thank some local democratic party members for giving you no choice in the matter of the upcoming election

democracy is better served when there is only one person to vote for, yes ??

as an aside, the same people are trying to kick of the green party candidate (see the Obj. Pending next to his name)

(by the by, I submitted write-in forms to the Cook and Lake county clerk’s offices yesterday, today will drop one off @ the McHenry shop – I had little chance of winning on the ballot, will have even less now – viva la democracia)

maybe this'll help

The Honorable Melissa Bean
432 Cannon House Office Building
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative:

I am writing to you as I have no other recourse at this time. I am a constituent in your district and have tried to get on the primary ballot to be the lone challenger for a race in the upcoming Democratic election.

On November 9th, 2009, a local Democratic committeeman, Gregory Ferritto, challenged my petitions. Should he prevail, there will be no challenger in the Democratic primary.

I have a 100% assurance that I will not be able to overturn the challenge to my petitions: I needed eight hundred ninety and collected eight hundred ninety. The only way the voters will have a choice in the primary is that Mr. Ferritto withdraws his challenge.

To be clear, Mr. Ferritto has every right to challenge, that's not being debated, it's just that, here in Illinois, election law allows for one person to be the deciding vote in a choice that the district’s residents should have.

As the Florida Supreme Court has previously said regarding votes in elections: "We consistently have adhered to the principle that the will of the people is the paramount consideration…The laws are intended to facilitate and safeguard the right of each voter to express his or her will in the context of our representative democracy. Technical statutory requirements must not be exalted over the substance of this right."

I'm asking for your help to try to persuade him into dropping his objection, as I said, I have no other option, other than to withdraw my petitions, and the result is Democratic voters of having no choice in the primary.

There is a hearing about the matter tentatively set for Tuesday, November 17, 2009, so seeing to this quickly would be appreciated. I only received the notice on Friday the 13th, sorry for the short notice.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this matter.

Jonathan Farnick

or not

you'll vote for who you're told to

the residents of the 8th now won't have a choice

a pro-choice*, pro-war authoritarian corporatist vs. an anti-choice, pro-war authoritarian corporatist, will be your only choices in the november election

be sure to thank a local democratic committee-person for the options

* this may change if the stupak amendment (in any form) is in the final health care reform bill and the democratic incumbent votes for it

there's two schools of thought [updated]

1. campaign contributions follow votes
2. votes follow campaign contributions

not saying what class this is from*, but here's the test results:

data from http://www.opensecrets.org/races/indus.php?id=IL08&cycle=2010

the only issue i have is her voting record and the general issue of legalized bribery no publicly financed elections

for comparison, here's a graphical representation of the election results from 2002-2008, by precinct, blue if 50+1 for the democrat, red if 50+1 went for the republican

my contention is that we could be better represented

*cF, ceF, ceFs, ceFta, ceFtasm

[update] the 1st picture above is with new data from same linked source, below is the original as posted on 10/10/2009, special trade contractors and misc business have been replaced by electric utilities and retail sales in the list; also adjusted formatting of pictures

political calculus [updated]

there's an election coming up on tuesday, with multiple choices for many different offices. i have one hard and fast rule:

never vote for a republican for federal office

but every rule has exception. just as every office has different roles, the rules and exceptions are just as varied, and you have to make each decision with varying weights and qualifications

start with the house, one-person-of-435 for a two year term. i need to take my hard and fast rule and take a hard and slow look at my incumbents voting record. in 1994 i had the choice of voting (again) for dan rostenkowski or a republican, but given his actions in congress, i voted for his challenger, as rep. rostenkowski did not deserve reelection. in no way am i saying that rep. bean is corrupt or involved in any scandal, but her votes on the patriot act, the fisa bill, habeas corpus protections, various free-trade pacts, the iraq war, the bankruptcy bill, the wall street bailout, etc, are deal killers, i cannot endorse, and i cannot vote for her. she does not deserve reelection, i will be voting for her challenger [this will be only the second time in my life voting for a republican for a federal office, but as i am not running as a write-in this election, i cannot vote for myself as i did two years ago]

next to the senate, one-person-of-100 for a six year term. sen. durbin's voting record leaves a bit to be desired [see here], but do not outweigh the need of a democrat in that position, i will endorse, and i will vote for him

and now for president, one-person-of-1 for a four year term. never vote for a republican for federal office is 95% of the reasoning here, i cannot, will not, vote for mccain, ever, under any circumstances. but that other 5% is weighs heavy. obama was not my first or second choice in the primary, too corporate, too triangulating, and as i stated before his VP choice was made, if there is even a one-degree separation with yale university, i will note for him. he chose biden, who fails that one-degree rule. if i were in a 'red' or a 'battleground' state, i may have waived that last 5%, but as i live in illinois, and obama is expected to win by 20 points, i can go third party, and will be voting for cynthia mckinney

however you end up voting, i could only hope that it is a free and fair vote, i have not done early voting, as the early voting here in illinois is done by touch-screen (last i heard). i will be voting on tuesday, as my precinct uses paper ballots that you need to mark with a black pen, but then that gets fed into a digital scanning computer.....

epic bail updated, again, and again

(Getty | Chip Somodevilla | Used Without Permission)

anything that comes out of the meatgrinder that is congress will be as worthless to remedy the problem as the credit derivative contracts themselves

i'd vote no on anything that comes out, it will cost more than you can imagine, won't fix the problem at hand, and cause more issues that will only need to be fixed later (see 9/11, iraq, katrina, etc)

and more on the bailout figure

“It’s not based on any particular data point, we just wanted to choose a really large number.”

and more on the bailout in general

the ultimate deal killer from the bill:

Section 122. Increase in the Statutory Limit on the Public Debt.
Raises the debt ceiling from $10 trillion to $11.3 trillion.

and again

Two weeks after persuading Congress to let it spend $700 billion to buy distressed securities tied to mortgages, the Bush administration has put that idea aside in favor of a new approach that would have the government inject capital directly into the nation’s banks — in effect, partially nationalizing the industry.

As recently as Sept. 23, senior officials had publicly derided proposals by Democrats to have the government take ownership stakes in banks.

The Treasury Department’s surprising turnaround on the issue of buying stock in banks, which has now become its primary focus, has raised questions about whether the administration squandered valuable time in trying to sell Congress on a plan that officials had failed to think through in advance.

two things

if you want to uphold the constituition, voting to violate it is the wrong way to go about it

(the republicans voted 188-1 for it, the majority of democrats voted against it, bean joined the republicans)

if you want to end the occupation and theft of the treasury on a grand scale, voting to continue it is the wrong way to go about it
